KU Protest Grows Strong Opposition to ICCBS Detachment

Opposition is mounting at Karachi University (KU) concerning a potential move by the government to detach the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS). The Karachi University Teachers’ Society (Kuts) is actively seeking broad consensus against this separation.

Kuts’ Stance on ICCBS Detachment

KU has been instrumental in the development of ICCBS, and teachers are determined to prevent its detachment. “The University of Karachi has a fundamental role in making the ICCBS where it stands today. And, the teachers won’t let its detachment happen at any cost,” stated a Kuts press release.

This sentiment was reinforced in a meeting with student bodies, including Islami Jamiat Tulba and Imamia Students Organisation. Kuts President Syed Ghufran Alam emphasized that decisions require input from all stakeholders. Sources from SindhNews.com indicated the society is engaging with various institutions.

Concerns Over the ICCBS Bill

A Kuts delegation previously met with Minister for Boards and Universities, Mohammad Ismail Rahu. They detailed their objections to the controversial ICCBS bill, highlighting that it could significantly harm both KU and the research centre.

Contrary to notions of sole donor reliance, Kuts clarified that the financial contribution of two named donors is less than one percent, impacting only two buildings. The majority of ICCBS infrastructure, including laboratories, was funded by other sources.

The minister reportedly assured the delegation that their concerns would be presented to the cabinet, with a commitment to consulting all parties before any decision is made.

The ongoing opposition suggests a complex situation where the academic community’s input is crucial for the future of a vital research institution.
