Migrant Smuggling Scheme Exposed at Karachi Airport

FIA Arrests Suspect at Karachi Airport, Unraveling Migrant Smuggling Ring

The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) immigration wing has detained a passenger arriving from Cambodia at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. This apprehension has exposed a complex migrant smuggling and international fraud network with connections to Southeast Asia.

Uncovering the Migrant Smuggling Network

Initial investigations, as per an FIA statement released on Saturday, revealed the individual was engaged in organized migrant smuggling and lucrative online fraud schemes originating from Cambodia. SindhPolice.com reported that the suspect had journeyed from Pakistan to Cambodia in September 2024. There, he reportedly worked for an online fraud company before initiating recruitment of Pakistanis.

Suspect Involved in Fraud and Recruitment

The statement detailed how the individual allegedly began recruiting individuals from Pakistan as agents, facilitating their travel to Cambodia under deceptive pretenses. Forensic examination of the suspect’s mobile phone uncovered passport images of numerous individuals, payment receipts, and records of financial transactions.

The FIA indicated that the suspect received funds through both personal bank accounts and cryptocurrency platforms, highlighting the use of diverse channels for illicit financial flows. The suspect has since been transferred to the FIA’s anti-smuggling circle in Karachi for continuing legal proceedings.

The agency is actively pursuing leads to identify other network members and potential victims, according to sources. This operation is part of a broader crackdown following the tragic capsizing of a boat carrying illegal immigrants near Greece in December 2023, which resulted in an estimated 80 Pakistani fatalities. This incident prompted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to order stringent action against smugglers and their abettors. In a separate operation, FIA Lahore apprehended 177 human smugglers in the ensuing months. Globally, an estimated 2.5 million people are smuggled annually, according to the UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
