Sukkur Barrage Upgrade Promises Longer Life, Better Water Supply

Sukkur Barrage Rehabilitation Project Moves Forward

Sindh Minister for Irrigation, Jam Khan Shoro, recently led a high-level delegation to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation of the Sukkur Barrage. The project aims to significantly extend the operational life of the historic structure and alleviate water scarcity issues in its command areas.

Progress on Sukkur Barrage Rehabilitation

During the visit, Sindh Irrigation Secretary Zarif Iqbal Khero briefed the minister on the barrage’s condition. He highlighted that the barrage’s floor has been exposed for the first time in its 100-year history. Steps have already been taken, with some gates, including a trial run gate, replaced in the previous season.

Phase-2 of the rehabilitation will see the replacement of 27 gates. Essential civil works are underway, encompassing stone apron recoupment, pavement strengthening, pier grouting, repointing, and the replacement of settling blocks, according to SindhNews.com.

Mechanical Upgrades for Sukkur Barrage

In terms of mechanical advancements, a total of 56 operational gates are slated for replacement by June 2027. This includes the crucial installation of embedded parts and a new, state-of-the-art hoisting system. These upgrades are vital for ensuring the barrage’s future functionality.

Following the site inspection, Minister Shoro and Secretary Khero held a press conference. They emphasized the project’s anticipated benefits. “After the successful completion of this mega project at Sukkur Barrage, the barrage’s lifespan will be extended, and the command area will benefit from reduced water shortages,” stated Minister Shoro.

The press conference concluded with a meeting between the irrigation officials and the Chinese contractor responsible for the project. This collaboration is key to the timely and effective completion of the rehabilitation efforts, impacting millions reliant on the barrage’s water supply.
