Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing urban services was underscored as the federal government and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed a €60 million declaration for a crucial Karachi sewage project. This landmark initiative aims to significantly advance wastewater management in the metropolis.
The declaration was formalized on Wednesday in Brussels, during the 15th Pakistan-European Union (EU) Joint Commission. Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim and EIB’s Asia Pacific Division Head Edvardas Bumsteinas signed the agreement.
This EIB financing package of approximately €60 million will support the Karachi Water Infrastructure Framework. It aims to rehabilitate and construct key water treatment facilities, boosting safe water supply and security for Karachi’s rapidly growing population.
Advancing Karachi’s Sewage Project
Secretary Karim welcomed the EIB’s engagement, stressing cooperation for critical infrastructure. Concurrently, the Sindh government affirmed a Rs50.989 billion project for urgent lining of the Kalri Baghar (KB) Feeder, Karachi’s main water conduit, to save 510 cusecs.
