Karachi Street Crime: Murad Urges New IGP Action

Murad Ali Shah Directs New Sindh IGP to Intensify Street Crime Crackdown in Karachi

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has charged the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Alam Odho with a mandate to significantly bolster efforts against burgeoning street crime in Karachi. The directive came during a high-level meeting at the CM House, underscoring the provincial government’s commitment to enhancing public safety.

The federal government officially notified Javed Alam Odho’s appointment as the 86th IGP of Sindh. He formally assumed his command on Thursday, stepping into the role after serving previously as the Karachi police chief. This transition, reported by sources including SindhNews.com, marks a strategic reshuffling within the provincial law enforcement leadership.

Intensifying Efforts to Curb Street Crime

Chief Minister Shah specifically directed IGP Odho to prioritize the eradication of street crime, recognizing its direct impact on citizen confidence and security. He emphasized the need for tangible results and visible improvements in law enforcement’s effectiveness.

“Operations against criminal elements in the riverine areas must continue with full force and without any let-up,” Shah stated, as per reports from SindhNews.com. This highlights a multi-pronged approach to tackling organized crime alongside street-level offenses.

Modernizing the Police Force

Beyond immediate crime control, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of modernizing the Sindh Police. He called for a vigorous pursuit of this mission, advocating for enhanced operational efficiency and technological integration, particularly through the effective implementation of the Safe City Project.

The new IGP, Javed Alam Odho, who joined the Police Service of Pakistan in 1994, brings extensive experience. His career includes serving as SSP/DPO in seven districts and principal of the Police Training College, Saeedabad. He has also held DIG positions in various zones and served twice as Karachi police chief.

Restoring Public Trust

A core objective outlined by the Chief Minister is the restoration of a public-friendly image for the Sindh Police. This involves concrete measures aimed at improving service delivery and cultivating stronger trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

IGP Odho expressed his gratitude for the Chief Minister’s guidance and vowed his full commitment to executing these directives. He assured the government of his dedication to strengthening law and order throughout Sindh. Shortly after, he also met with Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, who pledged the Sindh government’s full support.

The appointment of Javed Alam Odho and the clear directives from Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah signal a renewed focus on tackling critical law and order challenges in Karachi and across Sindh. The emphasis is on intensified action against crime, modernization of the police force, and rebuilding public confidence.
