Karachi Mayor Unveils Rs4.2bn Plan for Major Road Corridors
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has approved a comprehensive Rs4.2 billion plan to revamp four major road corridors, marking a substantial effort to modernize and beautify the city’s infrastructure. This initiative by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) seeks to give the metropolis a more contemporary and international urban appeal.
Under this extensive plan, significant allocations have been made for critical arteries. Pehalwan Goth Road, spanning from Habib University to the Race Course in Safoora, will receive approximately Rs1.9 billion. Rashid Minhas Road, linking Sharea Faisal to Shahrah-i-Usman via 4-K and Nagan Chowrangi, has been earmarked Rs1.12 billion.
Sir Shah Suleman Road, connecting Karsaz to Nazimabad Habib Bank Chowrangi, is allocated Rs574 million, while S.M. Taufiq Road, from Liaquatabad flyover to Teen Hatti Bridge, will receive Rs429 million for upgrades. KMC Financial Adviser Gulzar Abro confirmed fund finalization during a meeting.
Focus on Sustainable Infrastructure
A KMC spokesperson confirmed that this significant initiative will prioritize sustainable infrastructure, improved traffic management, and the creation of greener urban environments. The project encompasses complete rehabilitation, including resolving longstanding sewerage issues, developing lush green belts, and enhancing lane markings and traffic-friendly designs to improve connectivity across the city. The mayor has issued directives to expedite the tender process.
Mayor Wahab stressed the urgency of these projects, stating, “Karachi deserves better. I want fast-track and emergency-level execution.” He expressed confidence that with support from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership and provincial government, Karachi would see sustainable development by 2026. This commitment reflects a broader vision for the city, as reported by SindhNews.com.
Beyond this Rs4.2 billion plan, Mayor Wahab also announced key progress on other infrastructure developments. He confirmed that the Karimabad Underpass is scheduled to open for traffic in the first week of February. Additionally, the Baloch Colony Expressway is expected to be completed by January 31, and the University Road BRT Red Line project, after resolving financial hurdles with Sindh government support, aims for completion by July 31.
This multi-faceted infrastructure overhaul, spearheaded by the Karachi mayor, promises to significantly enhance urban mobility, reduce congestion, and improve the overall living environment for millions of residents. The rapid execution of these projects is set to transform Karachi’s urban landscape.
