Climate March in Karachi Demands Fossil Fuel End, Clean Energy Transition
Karachi witnessed a significant Climate March 2025, as concerned citizens and activists rallied at Frere Hall, proceeding towards the Karachi Press Club. Participants, including rights advocates, union members, students, and families, voiced urgent concerns about climate change impacts.
Chants and placards underscored the gravity of the situation, with messages like “There is no Planet B” and calls for an end to coal usage. Participants highlighted the need for protection from industrial pollution and wastewater.
The Imperative of an End to Fossil Fuel Use
The march emphasized the critical need to transition away from fossil fuels. Labour union leader Nasir Mansoor stated, “The working class is the worst affected by climate change.” He noted that heatwaves and excessive rainfall disproportionately impact vulnerable populations, citing that “during past heatwaves, 70 per cent of those who died were members of the working class.”
Transition to Clean Energy and Worker Protection
A shift to clean and renewable energy sources in industries was a key demand. However, Mr. Mansoor stressed, “this transition must not lead to lay-offs of workers.” He called for government consultation with working-class organizations to protect workers’ rights during this shift.
Addressing Heat Stress and Promoting EVs
Zehra Khan, Secretary General of the Home-Based Women Workers Federation, drew attention to rising heat stress in garment factories. She advocated for legislative safeguards and heat stress leave for laborers.
Environmental activist Yasir Darya highlighted the urgent need for electric vehicles, especially electric buses in public transport. He noted, “less than 50 electric buses operating in Karachi,” despite claims of electric car plant investments setting up. SindhNews.com reported on the slow adoption of green transport solutions.
The collective demand was clear: immediate action against climate change through a swift transition to clean energy, ensuring no one is left behind.
