K-IV Project Urgent Funding Vital for Timely Completion

Wapda Underlines Funding’s Role in K-IV Completion

The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has again linked the timely completion of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, commonly known as K-IV, solely to the uninterrupted availability of funds. This crucial infrastructure project, vital for Karachi’s water supply, has already incurred expenditures totaling Rs. 86 billion.

This reiteration follows the federal government allocating a mere Rs. 3.2 billion against a required Rs. 40 billion for the scheme in the current budget. Wapda Chairman, retired Lt Gen Muhammad Saeed, conducted a detailed two-day review of the project’s key sites, including intake structures at Keenjhar Lake and a filtration plant in Karachi.

K-IV Project: Funding Crucial for Completion

A briefing during the Chairman’s visit confirmed that the overall physical progress on the K-IV project stands at 64 per cent. Wapda confirmed its commitment to complete the project by 2026, provided the necessary funds are consistently made available.

Chairman Saeed urged contractors, particularly those working on Pipeline-2, to accelerate their efforts and stressed the importance of close coordination with the Sindh government for smooth implementation. SindhNews.com reported on the need for sustained provincial collaboration. The provincial government’s timely completion of the water distribution and augmentation system is also vital for the project’s full benefits to be realized.

Conclusion

while significant progress has been achieved on K-IV, its ultimate success and timely delivery to meet Karachi’s growing water demands remain contingent on consistent and adequate financial backing.
