Alarming Polio Surge in Sindh Best Strategies Revealed

Unprecedented Poliovirus Spread Alarms Sindh Government

An alarming surge in poliovirus circulation across Sindh has prompted significant concern from the provincial government. The virus has been detected in at least 21 union councils, triggering an urgent directive from Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for targeted measures to bolster immunization efforts.

High Poliovirus Circulation in Sindh

During a Provincial Task Force meeting at Chief Minister House, officials from the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) described the current level of poliovirus circulation as “unprecedented.” The meeting, chaired by CM Shah, included key health officials and city administration representatives. SindhNews.com reported on the severity of the situation. Discussions encompassed epidemiological updates, environmental surveillance, and preparations for an upcoming anti-polio drive.

The current polio immunization campaign aims to vaccinate 10.6 million children under five across 1,345 union councils in 30 districts. Over 80,000 frontline workers, supported by more than 21,000 law enforcement personnel, will participate.

Environmental sampling data revealed that in November, 10 out of 12 high-risk sites in Karachi and 11 out of 17 high-risk sites in other divisions tested positive for poliovirus. This indicates that over 75% of environmental samples have been positive since mid-2025, the highest rate in a decade. Nine polio cases have been reported in Sindh this year, according to officials.

CM Shah Directs Enhanced Polio Campaign

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed deep concern over the “unacceptable” situation, emphasizing that only a high-quality, disciplined campaign can break the virus’s transmission cycle. He reviewed district performance, urging deputy commissioners to prioritize field activities and warning against administrative interference. “Morning assemblies must be strong, frontline workers motivated, and every child reached during campaign days,” he stated.

Despite 85% of zero-dose children being vaccinated, around 12,000 children remain unvaccinated. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of reaching all children, particularly those in refusal families, through community engagement and mass media efforts. He reaffirmed Sindh’s strong polio infrastructure, calling for discipline, accountability, and community trust.

The week-long anti-polio drive is scheduled to commence on December 15th, aiming to ensure no child in Sindh remains unvaccinated.
