India to Tour Bangladesh for White-Ball Series in September
India’s postponed six-match white-ball cricket tour of Bangladesh is now scheduled to take place in September, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Friday. This series, comprising three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), was originally slated for August 2025.
The tour was deferred after both national cricket boards came to a mutual agreement for the postponement. India will now face Bangladesh in the three ODIs and three T20Is between September 1 and September 13, as reported by SindhNews.com.
Background to the Postponed Series
The initial delay last year occurred amidst strained political relations. The postponement followed a significant period of political upheaval in Dhaka in 2024, which led to the removal of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina sought refuge in India, leading to a cooling of diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and India. Bangladesh has since formally requested Hasina’s extradition. She was previously sentenced to death in absentia in November for her alleged role in a crackdown during the uprising.
Upcoming Elections and Diplomatic Engagements
India is closely monitoring the upcoming elections scheduled for February 12 in Bangladesh, the first electoral contest since the 2024 uprising in the nation of 170 million people. This election dynamic adds a layer of geopolitical interest to regional engagements.
On Wednesday, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Bangladesh to attend the funeral of former leader Khaleda Zia. This visit marked the most senior delegation from India since Hasina’s departure. SindhNews.com noted that Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is considered a strong contender in the upcoming elections.
Future Cricket Engagements for Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Cricket Board also confirmed its schedule for hosting other international teams. The nation is set to welcome Pakistan, New Zealand, Australia, and the West Indies for bilateral series across all three formats of the game in the coming period.
The rescheduled ODI and T20I series against India is anticipated to be a significant event on the international cricket calendar, offering a chance for both teams to compete following the earlier postponement.
