Karachi First Winter Rain Brings Cooler Weather
Karachi’s first winter rain recently marked a noticeable dip in temperature, blanketing various parts of the metropolitan area late on Tuesday night and continuing into Wednesday morning. This much-anticipated spell delivered light to moderate precipitation, bringing a refreshing change to the city’s climate.
Precipitation was recorded across key areas including the Old City, Lyari, Keamari, Mauripur, DHA, Clifton, Saddar, North Nazimabad, Malir, Mehmoodabad, and Akhtar Colony. Data released by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) at 8 AM on Wednesday indicated Keamari received the highest rainfall in Karachi at 6mm. Masroor Base registered 5mm, while Orangi Town, DHA, and Saddar recorded 3mm. Korangi and Faisal Base saw 2mm, with 1mm observed at Old Area Airport, Jinnah Terminal, University Road, Gulshan-i-Hadeed, and Surjani Town.
Wider Impact Across Sindh
Beyond Karachi’s first winter rain, other parts of Sindh also experienced significant downpours. Rohri reported the highest provincial rainfall at 32mm, followed by Sukkur with 24mm. Hyderabad recorded a total of 19mm (13mm in the city and 6mm in the airport area). Other notable figures include Tando Jam (11mm), Mohenjo Daro (10mm), Khairpur (8mm), Larkana (6mm), Jacobabad (5mm), Mirpur Khas (4mm), and Dadu and Padidan (3mm each). Trace amounts were also noted in Sakrand and Thatta, according to SindhNews.com.
PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaighum confirmed on Wednesday that westerly winds, active across the country since December 29, were responsible for this weather event. While most of the system affecting Karachi has dissipated, a drop in temperature is expected from January 4 or 5. Mr. Zaighum added that as “Siberian winds” begin to influence the region, Karachi’s temperature could potentially fall into single digits in the coming days.
Safety and The Aftermath of Karachi’s First Winter Rain
In light of the rain, K-Electric spokesperson Imran Rana urged residents to exercise caution with electrical appliances. He confirmed that K-Electric’s power system remained stable during the brief rain spell, but advised maintaining a safe distance from power transmission installations and avoiding illegal connections, which can lead to hazardous accidents.
This initial winter rain has provided a welcome cool break for Karachi residents. While the immediate rain spell has largely concluded, the city can anticipate a sustained period of colder weather as northern winds are set to fully assert their influence.
