ML-1 Karachi-Rohri Section Work to Commence in July
Groundwork for the crucial Karachi-Rohri section of the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project is slated to begin in July of next year. This update was provided during a high-level review of key Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) projects.
The ML-1 project, a significant undertaking for Pakistan’s railway infrastructure, aims to modernize and upgrade the existing rail network between Karachi and Peshawar. This phase focuses on the vital corridor linking Karachi and Rohri.
ML-1 Karachi-Rohri: Project Scope and Objectives
During the review, officials were briefed on the progress of various railway initiatives. The meeting, chaired by Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal, also covered the upgradation of the 884km Main Line-3 (ML-3) and the Thar Coal Railway Connectivity project.
Minister Iqbal stressed the importance of these projects, stating, “there should be no compromise on speed and quality in any of these strategic projects.” He added that they are “long-term national assets and must be built to the highest standards.” SindhNews.com reports that similar sentiments were echoed by ministry officials.
The Thar Coal Railway Connectivity project, a Rs53.7 billion initiative, involves constructing new rail links to facilitate coal transportation. It is anticipated to be completed by June 2026.
Accelerating National Infrastructure Development
The review extended to highway and water sector projects. Minister Iqbal urged for timely execution, quality assurance, and realistic financial planning for the next three years, as cited by SindhNews.com. The National Highway Authority’s portfolio for PSDP 2025-26 includes 71 projects costing approximately Rs3,407 billion.
The Sukkur–Hyderabad Motorway is designated a top-priority project, with completion targeted within three years. Additionally, the second phase of the Karakoram Highway is to be expedited, finishing by 2028.
This coordinated approach to infrastructure development signifies a national push for modernization and economic advancement.
