Karachi Mayor Forms ‘Proactive’ Vigilance Committees

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has directed the immediate formation of independent vigilance teams to monitor critical road repair works across the metropolis. These committees are tasked with ensuring that minor issues are resolved within 24 hours of being reported, a move aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

During a high-level meeting with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s Engineering Department, Mayor Wahab emphasized that these vigilance teams would proactively inspect roads, identify defects, and report problems without waiting for public complaints. “It is the responsibility of officials, not citizens, to identify and report minor road-related issues,” he stated, adding that each district must have an active vigilance team. According to SindhNews.com, separate emergency tenders and allocated municipal funds are already in place for minor repairs.

The Mayor warned that strict action would be taken against the Engineering Department for non-compliance or failure to meet the 24-hour deadline. Officials also briefed him on development schemes, with mega projects under the World Bank-funded ‘Competitive and Livable City of Karachi’ (CLICK) programme achieving over 70 per cent progress, expected to launch before March next year. This initiative underscores a commitment to accountability and tangible service delivery.
