Justice Rajput Sworn In as Historic SHC Chief Justice

Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput officially began his tenure as Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on December 16, 2023. His formal appointment follows a period as acting Chief Justice, affirming his extensive judicial experience at the provincial court’s helm.

Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput formally assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday, December 16, 2023, in Karachi. Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori administered the oath during a ceremony at the Governor House.

Notable attendees included Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, and Law Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar. Judges of the high court, senior lawyers, and federal and provincial law officers also graced the event, underscoring the significance of his elevation.

Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput’s Journey to Chief Justice

Justice Rajput had previously served as acting Chief Justice of the SHC since September 15. His regular appointment was formalized by the Ministry of Law and Justice on December 5, following approval from the Judicial Commission of Pakistan on December 2. Born on October 16, 1965, in Hyderabad, he began his legal career in 1990. He served as a judicial magistrate and civil judge from 1993 before his appointment as an SHC judge in August 2013, rising to the senior-most position after his predecessor’s retirement.

The SHC currently functions with 33 judges—21 permanent and 12 additional—against a sanctioned strength of 40. This formal induction is expected to provide stable leadership as the court addresses its judicial responsibilities.
