Harassment Allegations Prompt University Inquiry and Punjab School Initiative
Harassment allegations have surfaced at Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tando Jam, Hyderabad, leading to an immediate internal inquiry. Forty-nine female and male students from the Crop Protection Faculty’s 2024 batch have lodged complaints against Associate Professor Shoukat Abro. The university’s Harassment Committee has promptly taken notice, summoning both the accused professor and three female students to record their statements.
SAU Initiates Harassment Allegations Investigation
Ijaz Khoonharo, chairman of the SAU Harassment Committee, described the accusations as serious, confirming that the inquiry would strictly adhere to university regulations. He stated, “The committee will reach a final decision after hearing statements from both the students and the professor.” This proactive response reflects a commitment to addressing such complaints seriously. In a parallel development, the Punjab government has mandated the establishment of “Anti-Harassment Committees” in all public schools statewide within 30 days. This directive, following orders from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on the International Day of the Girl Child, aims to foster a safe and respectful environment for all students, especially girls.
These committees will operate as a confidential and effective mechanism to address sexual harassment, guided by the “Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010.” Each primary, elementary, secondary, and higher secondary school must establish a committee comprising the head of the institute and at least three teachers, with mandatory female representation. These measures underscore a broader commitment to ensuring accountability and safety across educational institutions.
